Abstract

This study investigates the evolution of Muslim writing in India, highlighting the changes it has undergone over time to express ideas and perspectives in different languages. The research objectives are twofold: to explore the historical development of Urdu Muslim Writing in India and to trace the cultural and linguistic influences that have shaped this form of expression. To achieve these objectives, the study addresses the following research questions: (i) What is the historical background of Muslim Writing in India? (ii) How did Urdu literature emerge in India? and (iii) What is the role of Urdu literature in Indian literature, particularly by Muslim writers? The Mughals, who ruled Hindustan from the 14th to the 18th century, played a significant role in shaping the cultural and linguistic landscape of India by introducing Persian and Urdu, which became integral to literary expression, including Eighteenth-century Urdu poetry and nineteenth-century Ghazal. However, the historical significance of 18th-century Islam, including Persian mystical poetry, Sufi, Sindi, and Urdu, is often overlooked by scholars of religion. The study concludes that Urdu literature emerged in India in the 18th century, despite the competition it faced from other indigenous languages. Even today, in a multilingual country like India, writers continue to use the Urdu language to express themselves and contribute to Indian literature in diverse forms.
