Abstract

Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is a vegetable crop that has significant economic value and is widely grown in tropical and subtropical areas. Nonetheless, it is highly unproductive due to the prevalence of many viral diseases, especially RNA viruses such as Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). The current research aims to identify, characterize and examine the genetic diversification of RNA viruses in eggplant in the Pothowar area of Pakistan. Field surveys were done, and symptomatic samples were examined by serological (DAS-ELISA) and molecular (RT-PCR) methods. The findings confirmed the prevalence of CMV and indicated a high disease incidence in the surveyed districts. Sequencing of the coat protein genes showed a high genetic diversity among isolates. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the local isolate formed a distinct cluster, indicating evolutionary separation. The paper discusses the relevance of early diagnosis and molecular profiling for the successful management of the disease and provides background for further research on virus resistance and control measures.
