Organizational Adaptation in the Era of Digital Transformation: Evidence from UK Multinational Corporations
Abstract
Digital transformation has become a central strategic concern for multinational corporations, yet its successful implementation depends not only on technological investment but also on the capacity of organizations to adapt structurally, culturally, and strategically. This study critically examines organizational adaptation in the era of digital transformation, with specific reference to UK multinational corporations. Drawing on the theoretical perspectives of dynamic capabilities, organizational ambidexterity, and digital leadership, the study explores how multinational firms respond to digital disruption while managing complex internal and external pressures. A qualitative multiple-case study design was adopted, supported by documentary analysis of academic literature, company reports, policy documents, and international institutional reports. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify key patterns related to organizational resistance, leadership capability, global–local tensions, resource constraints, competitive inequality, and the integration of sustainability within digital transformation strategies. The findings suggest that digital transformation is not a linear or purely technological process; rather, it is a contested organizational change process shaped by leadership decisions, cultural readiness, subsidiary coordination, capability development, and institutional conditions. The study further reveals that dynamic capabilities and ambidexterity provide useful theoretical lenses but remain limited unless applied to the practical realities of large, complex, and geographically dispersed organizations. The research contributes to the literature by shifting attention from technology adoption outcomes to the internal adaptation mechanisms through which multinational corporations attempt to convert digital transformation into sustainable competitive advantage. Practically, the study highlights the need for integrated digital strategies, agile structures, digitally competent leadership, continuous skill development, and stronger coordination between headquarters and subsidiaries. The study concludes that the success of digital transformation in UK multinational corporations depends on their ability to continuously realign technology, strategy, culture, and capabilities within an increasingly uncertain and unequal digital economy.
